Ambikagiri Memorial Trust Society

In the year 1988, with an intention to perpetuate the memory of Axom Keshari Ambikagiri Roychoudhury and propagate his ideology of national integration, universal brotherhood and serving the underprivileged section of the society, the Ambikagiri Memorial Trust was formed under the able leadership of Dinabandhabi Suchibrata Roychoudhury as the Managing Trustee along with eight other Trustees. The initial Trust fund was raised from the financial contributions made by these Trustees.

Besides conducting memorial seminars, workshops and bringing out several publications in the memory of Late Ambikagiri Roychoudhury, this Charitable Trust also undertook various welfare activities for women and children from time to time.

One such important initiative was starting a Residential Training-cum-Production Centre for the women from the economically weaker section of the society. This initiative was started with the help of a loan of rupees One Lakh in the year 1989 from the Gramin Bikash Nidhi.

Different skills like weaving, sewing and producing food products like pickles and jelly were taught by established trainers from Khadi Gram Udyog Board. From this training, almost 120 women were benefited who were able to earn their livelihood independently. This loan was later paid off personally by Suchibrata herself.

While contributing to different social causes through the Charitable Trust, the Managing Trustee Late Suchibrata Roychoudhury noticed the difficulties faced by many elderly citizens of our society with regards to basic needs such as companionship, a comfortable stay, safety and health care accessibility. This is when she focused on ensuring basic amenities for the aged group of the society by providing a safe and peaceful place for them to stay, interact and feel secure. Hence, the proposal to establish a ‘Home for the elderly’ was initiated and the Trust constituted a committee to develop the project.

Once the decision to establish the Old Age Home was finalised, the Ambikagiri Memorial Trust Society was formed in the year 2001 as a Voluntary Social Welfare Organisation registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. This was done with an objective to involve more people and spread the activities further by covering a larger sphere. It started with 110 Life Members and 5 patrons. A substantial fund was raised with the help of the financial assistance extended by these members that marked the beginning of the first Old Age Home of this region.

Ambikagiri Memorial Trust Society and Dinabandhabi Suchibrata Roychoudhury would be remembered, among other things, for establishing the State’s first old-age home named ‘Amar Ghar’ at Patharquarry in Guwahati. The Managing Trustee donated a plot of her own land for the purpose.
